Decorating a New Home 101: Where to Start | Estatio
With new generations entering homeownership after living at home or renting, many people are buying their first homes and feeling a bit lost about where to start. This series is here to help you with every detail of the decorating process, with links to what our very own Estatio team have found along the way.
The core elements of a home are arguably the most important, as they set the tone for everything else. Unfortunately, these are decisions you can’t really dwell on, since they are the main building blocks of your home and inform all the other choices you make.
As I’m sure you are sick of hearing, paint can truly transform a space, so choosing the right colour for each room in your new home is vital to creating the right vibe.
Deciding on a colour can take time, and it’s important to test it in different lights in your space to get it right. We are no experts on paint and what works best, so let us refer you to people who are:

Before you go crazy buying new things, it’s important to get a lay of the land and decide how you want things arranged in a space. A good tool for figuring out what will fit best in a room is the IKEA planner.
Room planner | IKEA UK
Even if you aren’t planning to buy anything from IKEA, using this resource to measure everything will save you a lot of guesswork when shopping.
Lighting is important to decide on early, as it can determine how a room looks, right down to the shade of paint. Although you can always change it later if it doesn’t suit, there are a few things you will want to avoid having to backtrack on. Ask yourself:
• Will the room be lit mainly by overhead lighting, or by lamps and other secondary lighting?
• Are you going for cool-toned or warm-toned lighting in your home or room?
Here are some good places to buy lighting, whether it means buying lamps or simply updating a few shades on your overhead lights:
Pooky | Beautiful decorative lighting
Lamps | ZARA United Kingdom
Lighting | John Lewis
Lighting | Table & floor lamps, ceiling lights, shades | H&M GB
You’d never think something as small as hardware could have a major impact, but it does, precisely because you use pulls, knobs, racks, taps, light switches and the like every single day. Even if you can’t redo a whole kitchen or bathroom right away, swapping out the hardware is an instant upgrade.
All these small details make a big difference in pulling the full design of a room or home together.
Here are some of the places you can go to find the hardware you need:
Brassware | Beata Heuman
Cabinet knobs & handles | Willow & Stone
When you are doing up a home and there is a lot to do, it can feel overwhelming to deal with everything at once. A good way to split it all up is to focus on one room at a time. We would suggest starting with the bedroom and kitchen, so there are at least a few spaces in your new home where you can relax and that are fully functional.
Turning our focus to the bedroom, moving home or buying your first home is a brilliant excuse to refresh all the basics.
Refreshing the soft furnishings in the bedroom is a small change that makes the space feel complete once the heavy-duty items are in. New sheets, a duvet, a duvet cover and towels add the final touches that make the room undeniably yours.

That’s the foundations laid and your bedroom well on its way to feeling like home. In Part 2, we’ll move on to the kitchen, the heart of the home, and share more finds from the Estatio team.
